Eternal Interlude

Shot on black and white super 8 film, „Eternal Interlude“ portrays the area around Nihonbashi - a bridge built in the Edo era and the eponymous river it crosses. Both bridge and river were covered by the elevated city highway before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Interweaving structures and movements observed on and around the bridge were interpreted on the the visual, audio and textual level.

In the text that is superimposed on the images, different characters are introduced, beginning with Haruhiko Higami, who worked as the concept photographer for various works of Mamoru Oshii. From (this fictional account of) him, the story drifts in various directions, connecting the history of Tokyo’s rivers with various associations and contemplations.

„Now both the river and the old bridges are buried and the above has turned into the below. I imagine a world in which we simply start layering new structures onto old ones, slowly burying them and creating artificial fossils. A world in which there will be a submerged ruin version of Tokyo underneath shiny new structures, like a mirrored image of Evangelion’s Neo Tokyo-3. Here, the old town would be driven underground, remaining like a memory lingering in the subconscious.“
