Moon Capital

A woodblock print by ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s series “100 Aspects of the Moon” served as point of departure for this work. In the print, which depicts the broken hearted lady in waiting Ariko no Naishi, the moon only appears as a reflection on the water. Reflections of light can also be seen in many of the slideshow images, as they are photos of pre-existing images, taken from TV-screens and private photo-albums. Like that, the immediate perception is disturbed; alluding to the unreliability of memories.

„How hopeless it is; it would be better for me to sink beneath the waves; perhaps then I could see my man from Moon Capital.“

While one projector shows 80 analogue slides in an infinite loop, a second projector continuously illuminates a postcard-sized ukiyo-e print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.

Both through the images of the slideshow as well as the juxtaposition of movement and stasis by the differently used slide projectors, the installation plays with internal and external experiences of time and explores the mechanisms of individual and collective memory.
